The narrows – a canyon in the narrowest part of Zion National Park with the Colorado river running threw it. This hike is seen to be for the more experienced however, just like angels landing I wanted to take the challenge on!! The hike is around 4 Miles in again 4 back, but really you can turn around at any point.
We started the day early to beat any crowds but not the heat. Although it was August the canyon is cold. Not only are you deep in the canyon shaded most of the time but also wet! The river at points was over my knees. A walking stick is a MUST you cannot see the bottom of the river and it’s full of rocks and stones, a stick is needed to feel your way. Although the canyon is fairly flat the terrain makes it a slow pace hike. Some rocks are very slippery and good footwear is key.
The narrows are amazing. When the sun shines down into the canyon the layers of rock and colours are golden. Be sure to take a jacket as it can get very cold and also you need to watch out for flash floods. Overall I found this hike harder than angels landing due to it being slippery underfoot and fairly cold. There are not many places to sit or stand to avoid the river and dry off. Don’t for get to keep your things eg camera in a waterproof bag or better an action camera such as a GoPro.
